Abstract
The challenges Indonesian migrant workers faced in English speaking skill, particularly in Malaysia, were their lack of self-confidence, limited speaking ability, and lack of opportunities to practice speaking. The research focused on the role of scaffolding method by teachers to bridge the gap between learners' current abilities and their potential for growth in English speaking proficiency.
The study aimed to (1) analyse teacher’s scaffolding method in teaching English speaking skill for Indonesian migrant workers in English Academy Bengkulu Malaysia.
This study used descriptive qualitative method with case study design. The research participants included the manager and two teachers that were selected through purposive sampling. The data collection involved observation, interviews, and documentation analysis.
Research findings revealed the application of the scaffolding method by two teachers during speaking practice activities. Teacher 1 utilized topic discussions, while Teacher 2 focused on storytelling. The scaffolding method includes four stages to improve students' speaking abilities: assistance provided by others, assistance provided by self, internalization, and de-automatization. (1) In the first stage, both teachers used affective scaffolding through motivation, analytical scaffolding through vocabulary translation, sentence structuring, demonstration, and feedback, and social scaffolding through peer help with vocabulary and grammar. (2) In the second stage, many students observed practiced speaking without assistance, and the teachers built student’s confidence by ignoring minor grammatical errors. (3) The third stage, internalization, was facilitated by “outdoor activities” monitored by teachers via WhatsApp, which allowed students to practice speaking in real-life contexts. (4) The final stage, de-automation, was not fully achieved because students remained dependent on the teacher's instructions and preferred to use their native language outside of practice sessions.
