Abstract
Speech acts are a part of pragmatics that deal with the meaning of utterances.
One type is illocutionary acts. In an illocutionary act, the speaker performs an action
by saying something with the right intention and context. Illocutionary acts appear
in everyday life and in literary works, such as movie. One movie that contains
illocutionary acts is The Shawshank Redemption. The movie tells the story of Andy
Dufresne and Ellis Redding as they seek solace and redemption through common
decency. Since the film is an American prison drama, it offers many opportunities
for language teaching.
The purpose of this study are to classify the types of illocutionary acts and
find the dominant type of the main characters' utterances. The researcher focuses
on the two main characters in the film, namely Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd
Redding. The study uses John R. Searle's speech act theory.
The researcher used qualitative method. The data come from the movie
script and dialogue of the main characters (Andy and Red), with 161 selected
utterances. The steps were watch the movie, read the movie script, highlight the
utterances related to illocutionary acts, and classify the data based on the types of
illocutionary acts. Content analysis is based on Creswell's theory, the steps are mark
the utterances, classify all marked utterances according to illocutionary types into a
table, quantify each finding, and draw a conclusion.
The findings of this study show that all types of illocutionary acts are
present. There are 78 Representative acts, which constitute 48.4%, 4 Declarative
acts, which constitute 2.5%, 11 Commissive acts, which constitute 6.8%, 50
Directive acts, which constitute 31.1%, and 18 Expressive acts, which constitute
11.2%. In conclusion, Representative acts dominate in The Shawshank Redemption
because the film focuses on the disclosure of personal facts, circumstances, and
beliefs that serve to describe the inner world of the characters, as well as their
physical and social conditions, while Declarative acts are the least common. This
study recommends that teachers consider using movies as an engaging resource for
teaching English, as they can boost student motivation and involvement.
Additionally, the study provides valuable insights into understanding illocutionary
acts and serves as a solid foundation for future research on illocutionary acts.
