Vocabulary is a set of features list of words that is used to communicate effectively with each others in orally and script particular language. Vocabulary is one of the most important aspect of language that must be learned to understand what you hear and read, to help the English students communication better, to understand a language, and you be able to say what to when speaking or writing more better. Synonym is a technique for teaching vocabulary. Synonym is one of the technique that can classify two or more words that has a different form but have the same or almost the same (similar) meaning.
The purpose of this study was to verify whether there was a significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery who were taught using synonym technique and those who were not taught using synonym technique at MTS PGRI SELUR Ponorogo.
This study applied quantitative approach and used the quasi-experimental research design. The population of this study was the students at the ninth grade of MTS PGRI SELUR Ponorogo. The ninth grade consisted of 28 students. They are divided into class IX A and IX B. Each class consisted of 14 students. The researcher used two classes as experimental class and control class. The researcher used purposive sampling to select population. The procedure of data collection were pre-test and post-test. To analysis them, the researcher used independent samples t-test to investigate whether there are significant effectively of using synonym technique in building students’ vocabulary mastery at MTS PGRI SELUR Ponorogo.
The results of this study showed that the mean score in post-test from experimental class or the students who being given treatment was higher 79.64286, while control class or the students who not given treatment was 57.85714. Moreover the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = .000 which is lower than 0.05. It indicates that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, based on the results of this study above, it can be concluded that there are any significant differences on students’ vocabulary mastery who taught using synonym technique than students who are not taught using synonym technique at MTS PGRI SELUR Ponorogo. It is important for the teachers. They can use it as a different vocabulary learning technique than the conventional that is commonly used.
