Sundari,Siti.2025.The Correlation of Gender and Age as Social Factors on English Learning among Students at SMPN 2 Jetis Ponorogo Sarjana’s Thesis,English Language Teaching Department,Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo.Advisor: Dr. Ahmadi, M.Ag.
Keywords : Gender, Age, English Learning.
This study examines the correlation between gender and age as social factors in English learning among students at SMPN 2 Jetis Ponorogo. The background of this research is based on the assumption that social differences, such as gender and age range, play a significant role in influencing how students understand learning materials, respond to the learning process, and motivate themselves in learning a foreign language. These factors are believed to create variations in individual learning experiences, making it essential to analyze them in order to gain a deeper understanding of their impact on the effectiveness of English learning in the school environment.
This research aims to investigate the relationship between gender and age as social factors in the English learning process among 7th to 9th-grade students at SMPN
2 Jetis, Ponorogo. A quantitative approach was used in this study, employing a questionnaire as the main instrument to collect data. The objectives of this research are:
(1) to identify the relationship between gender and the English learning process, (2) to identify the relationship between age and the English learning process, and (3) to investigate the correlation between gender and age as social factors in the English learning process.
Using a quantitative approach and survey method, data were collected from a number of students at SMPN 2 Jetis Ponorogo by focusing on two main variables: gender and age. The questionnaire was distributed to gather information on how these two social factors influence key aspects of English learning, such as students’ academic achievement. Thus, this study not only provides a general overview of the differences in students' characteristics based on social factors but also highlights how these differences may impact the effectiveness of the learning process they experience.
The results of the analysis show that the correlation between gender and English learning has a correlation coefficient of 0.447, which falls into the moderate correlation category, while the correlation between age and English learning has a correlation coefficient of 0.802, which falls into the very strong correlation category. Furthermore, the study also found a very strong correlation between gender and age in relation to English learning, with a correlation coefficient of 0.918. Based on these findings, all null hypotheses (H₀) were rejected, and the alternative hypotheses (Hₐ) were accepted. This study suggests that teachers should pay more attention to gender and age factors in English learning, including in designing a more inclusive and effective curriculum and teaching strategies.
