Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in
mastering English vocabulary among seventh-grade students at MTs Al-Mukarrom.
Vocabulary mastery is fundamental in learning English. The Duolingo application
aims to add variety to learning media to increase students' interest in learning.
This study used a quantitative method through a quasi-experimental design
involving two groups. The researcher used VII A as the experimental class using
the Duolingo application and VII B as the control class taught using lecturing
methods. Researchers collected data by conducting research at school, such as
teaching, giving tests, and observing students. Then, the data was analyzed and
described using data description techniques, t-tests, and n-gain tests.
The study compared the learning outcomes of two classes, one using the
Duolingo method and the other a lecturing method, focusing on English vocabulary
mastery. The experimental class showed a significant improvement, with average
pre-test scores rising from 89.30 to 94.0, while the control class only increased
slightly from 87.89 to 88.68. Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference in
post-test results between the two classes, with the experimental class yielding a p
value of 0.001, indicating effectiveness. In contrast, the control class had a slightly
significant change. Additionally, the n-gain tests supported these findings, with the
experimental class achieving 0.47 compared to 0.07 for the control class,
confirming that the Duolingo method is more effective than the lecturing method.
The results showed that students in the experimental class showed better
vocabulary mastery than students in the control class. The analysis data indicated
that the Duolingo application had a positive impact on improving students'
vocabulary. The conclusion of this study confirms that the use of the Duolingo
application can improve English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade students
compared to only lecturing methods.
