This study investigates the role and strategies of the Language Student Activity Unit (UKM Bahasa) at IAIN Ponorogo in enhancing students’ English-speaking skills through creative and structured programs. The background of this research is based on the growing demand for English proficiency among university students, particularly in speaking skills, as a crucial component of academic success and global competitiveness. UKM Bahasa serves as a platform where students can develop their communicative competence through various extracurricular activities designed to support language acquisition in an interactive and supportive environment.
The research uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the strategies, media, and evaluation techniques employed by UKM Bahasa. Data were collected through interviews with UKM Bahasa coordinators and members, direct observations of speaking activities, and documentation reviews. This methodological approach allowed the researcher to obtain an in-depth understanding of how UKM Bahasa's programs are designed and implemented to meet the linguistic needs of its members.
The findings show that (1) UKM Bahasa implements various interactive strategies such as peer mentoring, role-playing, public speaking training, weekly language classes, language habituation, and activities like Language Safari to improve students' speaking skills. (2) The organization also uses a combination of digital media—such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and online dictionaries—and traditional resources like grammar books, vocabulary lists, and conversation scripts to create a balanced and flexible learning environment. (3) Additionally, the effectiveness of the programs is evaluated through structured and continuous assessments, including observations, peer evaluations, and periodic performance reviews, conducted on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis to ensure student progress and adaptability of teaching methods.
In conclusion, UKM Bahasa successfully fosters a communicative, creative, and supportive environment for English-speaking development. Its strategies, media, and evaluation system not only strengthen students' speaking skills but also provide meaningful experiences through programs such as language classes, study visits, and other interactive activities. Future research is encouraged to explore the long-term impact of these programs on students' career readiness and personal growth.
