Abstract

Mu’allifah, Afifitul. 2024. STUDENTS’ ANXIETY AND TEACHERS’ EFFORT TO OVERCOME IN EFL LEARNING AT NEON COURSE MADIUN. Thesis. English Language Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo. Advisor: Wiwin Widyawati, S.S., M. Hum.

Anxiety is one of the most common psychological barriers encountered by students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. At Neon Course, anxiety among students often stems from a lack of self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, limited mastery of grammar and vocabulary, and concerns about being judged by peers, teachers, or even parents. These emotional challenges can reduce students’ willingness to participate in classroom activities particularly speaking and negatively affect their overall progress in acquiring English.
This study aims to investigate how teachers at Neon Course make efforts to reduce students’ anxiety during EFL learning. The focus is placed on identifying teaching strategies that help students feel more comfortable, confident, and motivated to engage in the learning process without fear of negative evaluation or failure.
The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, involving interviews with English teachers and students at Neon Course. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews to explore the types, causes, and solutions related to EFL learning anxiety. The data were then analyzed thematically to draw patterns and insights regarding teacher strategies and student experiences.
The findings indicate that levels of anxiety at Neon Course are relatively low due to the effective strategies employed by the teachers. These strategies include creating a supportive learning environment, providing positive and constructive feedback, avoiding harsh corrections, and incorporating interactive activities such as games, role-play, humor, and icebreakers. As a result, students feel more secure and confident in expressing themselves. The study concludes that a warm, non-judgmental classroom atmosphere plays a key role in minimizing anxiety and enhancing students’ engagement in EFL learning.
