Online platforms such as Free4talk can serve as effective instructional tools for teaching English, particularly in enhancing students' speaking skills. Speaking is a vital component of English as a foreign language, yet many learners struggle to communicate effectively in spoken English. The integration of Free4talk in language instruction is expected to increase students’ motivation and engagement, thereby facilitating the development of their speaking proficiency.
This research aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in the improvement of speaking skills among tenth-grade students taught using the Free4talk online learning platform at SMKN 1 Ponorogo. Furthermore, the findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for English teachers, particularly in the context of teaching speaking skills.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. It involved two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The population consisted of tenth-grade students at SMKN 1 Ponorogo, this research used random sampling with a sample of 35 students in Experimental clas and also 35 students in Control class. Data were collected through tests and documentation. The researcher utilized an independent sample t-test and N-Gain analysis to examine the data.
The results show that the experimental group, which was taught using Free4talk, experienced a significant increase in the mean score from 48.47 for pretest to 90.56 for posttest, accompanied by a decrease in standard deviation from 8.933 to 7.441. In contrast, the control group, which was taught using a worksheet book, also showed an improvement, with the mean score increasing from 51.39 to 87.78 and the standard deviation decreasing from 10.862 to 7.601. Although both groups demonstrated progress, the experimental group showed a greater improvement of 42.09 points compared to 36.39 points in the control group. These findings indicate that the use of Free4talk was more effective in enhancing the speaking skills of tenth-grade students at SMKN 1 Ponorogo.
