Abstract
Vocabulary and grammar are two important aspects in writing, one of which is in writing essays. Researcher found problems with limited vocabulary and correct grammar in English Language Teaching Department students, semester 4, IAIN Ponorogo, in writing or composing English. Current technological developments have provided many tools to overcome these problems. QuillBot is one of them, by providing many features that can improve the quality of writing. These features include paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, plagiarism checker and translation.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of QuillBot in helping students improve vocabulary and grammar in writing essays, especially for semester 4 English Language Teaching Department students, IAIN Ponorogo. Therefore, this study is expected to be a tool to help them create original writing without making vocabulary and grammar mistakes.
In this study, researcher used a quasi-experimental class research design. In addition, the method of data collection through direct observation in the form of pretests and posttests. With the main subjects of semester 4 students of the English Education Department, IAIN Ponorogo. Where the sample of this study was 32 students who were divided into a control class and an experimental class. In the experimental class, treatment will be given in the form of essay writing using QuillBot, while the control class will be assisted by AI media in the form of ChatGPT. For data analysis, because the data was not normally distributed, the researcher used a non-parametric test in the form of the Mann-Whitney test.
The results of the study showed that there was an increase in vocabulary and grammar after the treatment. With that, it can be said that Ho is rejected. So H1 is accepted, namely there is a significant influence of the use of QuillBot in improving students' vocabulary. Then H2 is also accepted where there is a significant influence of the use of QuillBot in improving students' grammar. So it can be concluded that QuillBot is effective in improving vocabulary mastery and grammar accuracy in essay writing for English students.
