In today's digital age, the use of technology in education is no longer an option, but a necessity, especially in teaching speaking skills that require constant practice and interaction. Traditional classroom methods often fail to provide flexible and engaging speaking opportunities for students. Blended learning, which combines face-to-face and online learning, offers a promising solution especially when supported by interactive platforms such as Moodle.
The purposes of this research are (1) To observe the implementation of Moodle as a Blended Learning platform in teaching students’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo. (2) To describe the students’ perceptions regarding the implementation of Moodle as a Blended Learning platform in teaching students’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo. (3) To observe how teachers solve the challenges in implementing Moodle as a Blended Learning platform in teaching speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo. This research explores how Moodle was implemented as part of a blended learning approach to improve students' speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo, specifically in Grade 11 students.
This research employed a qualitative case study design to explore the implementation of Moodle as a blended learning platform in teaching students’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo. The study focused on Grade 11 students and involved various data sources to obtain in-depth insights. The primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with students and teachers, classroom observations during both online and face-to-face sessions, and documentation analysis of student assignments and speaking assessments. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes, as well as content analysis to evaluate the relevance and effectiveness of learning materials and assessment documents. This methodological approach enabled a comprehensive understanding of how Moodle supports speaking skill development and how teachers and students interact with the platform in a blended learning environment.
The results of this study revealed a significant positive response in students' speaking performance, addressing the core problems identified in the beginning lack of speaking practice, low confidence, and limited motivation. Moodle provided a flexible and supportive digital environment where students could practice speaking skills beyond traditional classroom constraints. Through features such as discussion forums, voice recordings, and video assignments, students engaged in more frequent and varied speaking practices. These tools enabled them to express themselves more freely without the anxiety of speaking in front of the whole class. Timely the feedback from teachers within the Moodle platform encouraged students to reflect on their performance and improve continuously. This process not only helped increase their motivation but also built their confidence gradually. In conclusion, the integration of Moodle into a blended learning setting helped bridge the gap between theory and practice by offering more opportunities for speaking practice, supporting students’ emotional readiness, and creating a motivating environment. This implementation effectively addressed the original challenges outlined in the study and demonstrated how technology can be used to enhance English speaking skills in regional schools like SMAN 1 Pulung Ponorogo.
