This study attempts to explore the correlation between English students' learning motivation and English students' achievement at SMK PGRI 2 Ponorogo. The background of the present study is based on the phenomenon that many of the students were unable to reach Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) in English. English is typically considered a tough subject, and low motivation is one of the factors that influence bad performance. Learning motivation, both intrinsic interest and curiosity, and extrinsic grades and rewards, is presumed to play an important role in the development of students' academic achievements.
This study aims to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the students' motivation to learn and their performance in learning English. It further aims to explore the degree of students' motivation and how it affects their performance. The findings are expected to be useful to teachers, parents, and school administrators in crafting measures to improve the motivation of students. Moreover, the study also hopes to benefit education in general, especially motivational forces that drive learners' performance in language acquisition. Through establishing the relationship between motivation and performance, educators will be able to help students to a larger extent to achieve academic success.
This study used the quantitative method with a correlational design. The populations used in the research were grade XI students of Automotive Body Engineering (TBO) major period 2024/2025, with a sample of 38 students using purposive sampling. Data were collected with a closed-ended questionnaire based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to measure the students' learning motivation and with a record of students' English achievement scores from report cards. The purpose was to determine whether or not there existed a statistically significant relationship between students' motivation and their performance in English. All the instruments employed were validated and reliable to guarantee the accuracy of them. Data analysis was done using SPSS, including normality tests, linear regression analysis, and hypothesis testing.
The influence of learning motivation on English language Achievement. Based on the results of multiple linear regression analysis table 1.12. calculation of learning motivation variables on English achievement, a calculated t value of 3.985 was obtained, thus a significant value greater than t of table t was 1.68709 (t calculated 3.985 > t table 1.68709). Meanwhile, the significant value in the learning motivation variable was 0,000 < 0,05. Therefore, it can be concluded that learning motivation has a positive and significant influence on the English language achievement of students of SMK PGRI 2 Ponorogo
