Abstract
Metaphor is a core component of figurative language that not only enriches poetic expression but also contributes meaningfully to English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly in enhancing reading comprehension, interpretative analysis, and critical language awareness. By connecting abstract ideas to vivid imagery, metaphors promote deeper semantic processing and support long-term understanding. Although learners may face challenges due to cultural and linguistic unfamiliarity, the use of metaphor in classroom instruction offers engaging opportunities to explore meaning and strengthen overall language skills.
This study investigates metaphorical expressions in Aurora Leigh: A Poem in Nine Books by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and examines their impact on language acquisition among ELT learners. Using Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff and Johnson, the research categorizes metaphors into structural, orientational, and ontological types. Furthermore, the researcher analyzes how metaphors contribute to English Language Teaching.
A qualitative approach was used, combining content analysis with classroom observation, an in-depth interview with the teacher, and student feedback. In the content analysis phase, metaphorical expressions in Aurora Leigh were identified and classified into three categories based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory: Structural Conceptual Metaphors (SCM), Orientational Conceptual Metaphors (OCM), and Ontological Conceptual Metaphors (TCM). Selected examples were applied in the classroom through reading tasks, vocabulary activities, and discussions. Data were also collected through classroom observation, student worksheets, a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 22 eleventh-grade students at SMKN 1 Sooko, and informal interviews to assess learner perceptions and responses.
The research identified 830 metaphorical expressions, consists of 402 structural, 183 orientational, and 245 ontological metaphors. These findings reveal that metaphor-rich literary texts can effectively support vocabulary development by improving students’ contextual understanding, inferencing skills, and word usage. Learners showed improved vocabulary recall and expressed positive attitudes toward learning through poetry, indicating that integrating metaphorical literature into English Language Teaching can enhance both linguistic competence and literary appreciation.
