English is a crucial global communication tool, essential for accessing knowledge, building relationships, and supporting academic and professional growth. In Indonesia, it is taught from elementary to higher education, requiring mastery of skills like reading, writing, speaking, and grammar. Reading, in particular, helps develop vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking, but many students, including those at SMK Kesehatan Bina Karya Medika Ponorogo, struggle with it due to unfamiliar vocabulary and grammar. To address this, the researcher proposes using the “Readable” app, which simplifies complex texts and supports understanding by adjusting vocabulary and sentence structure. Based on Nell K. Duke and P. David Pearson learning theory, this approach aims to improve students' reading comprehension skills through appropriate instructional support and the use of digital technology.
The objectives this research is to determine whether students who were taught using the Readable application achieve higher levels of reading comprehension compared to students who are taught without this media.
This study employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, specifically a nonequivalent control group design, using pretest and posttest assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the Readable application in improving English reading comprehension. Conducted over three months at SMK Kesehatan Bina Karya Medika Ponorogo, the study involved 55 students from two grade XI classes—TF1 (27 students) as the experimental class and TF2 (28 students) as the control class. Data collection includes pretests and posttests focusing on reading skills such as main ideas, supporting details, inference, and vocabulary, along with classroom observations to assess student engagement and instructional effectiveness. Hypothesis testing in this study used the t test technique with SPSS 26.
The results of this study indicate that in terms of the results of the scores and analysis on the pretest and posttest scores in the control class and the experimental class, the results obtained are effective. From the results of the two tailed T test analysis, it shows that there is no significant difference in the pretest which shows the number 0.54, that students have the same reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, from the results of the two tailed t test analysis on the posttest, it shows a number of 0.00, so it can be said that in the posttest analysis, between the control class and the experimental class has a significant difference, and it can be said that learning with the Readable application is effective for improving the reading comprehension skills of Bina Karya Medika Ponorogo Health Vocational School students.
