Abstract

Fadhlarrozaq, Usyaq. 2025. Politeness Attitudes in Quran Memorization at Madrasah Diniyah Al-Islamiyah Jabung Ponorogo: A Social Construction Perspective of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. Thesis. Department of Islamic Religious Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Ponorogo. Advisor: Abu Muslim, S.Ag., M.A.
Keywords: Politeness, Quran Memorization, Social Construction of Peter L. Berger and Luckmann
Politeness can also be defined as behavior or an attitude that reflects respect, appreciation, and attentiveness towards others in social interactions. At Madrasah Diniyah Al-Islamiyah, this issue is evident in the number of students who lack proper manners or etiquette, both towards their peers and their teachers. In response to this condition, the school initiated a Qur'an memorization (Tahfidz al-Qur'an) program as an effort to shield students from negative social influences, aiming to cultivate a Qur'anic generation with noble character (akhlakul karimah). This study analyzes the improvement of students' politeness through the lens of the Social Construction Theory of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, which posits that social reality including values such as politeness is shaped through the processes of social interaction, objectification, internalization, and externalization.
This research aims to (1) explore the implementation of the Tahfidzul Qur’an program for students at Madrasah Diniyah Al-Islamiyah in Jabung Village, Mlarak Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency in relation to their politeness, and (2) examine the impact of the Tahfidzul Qur’an program on students’ politeness from the perspective of the social construction theory.
The study adopts a qualitative research approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed and presented descriptively. The data analysis technique employed follows the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The results of the study show that (1) the implementation of the tahfidzul qur’an program at Madrasah Diniyah Al-Islamiyah in Jabung Village is an integral part of the learning activities, combined with other subjects such as Islamic creed and ethics (aqidah akhlak), Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), Qur'anic letters (hijaiyah), and reading comprehension (muthola’ah). The program is intended to habituate students to reading and memorizing the Qur’an, particularly ensuring that all students are able to read and begin memorizing Juz 30. (2) The practice of Tahfidzul Qur’an has a positive impact on the character development of students, especially in terms of politeness and courtesy. Students demonstrate behavioral changes such as improved discipline, careful speech, respectful communication with teachers, and reverence for the Qur’an and their mentors. The formation of politeness occurs through the three dialectical stages of social construction: objectification, internalization, and externalization.
