Presupposition is a fundamental concept in pragmatics that involves implicit assumptions shared by speakers and listeners to derive meaning in communication. These assumptions serve as background knowledge that must be accepted as true for an utterance to make sense. This study examines the types and frequency of presuppositions in the dialogues of the animated film Ultraman Rising and investigates how such analysis can enhance the teaching and learning process in English language education.
The aim of this research are to identify and classify the types of presuppositions in the dialogue of Ultraman Rising based on George Yule’s framework, and to analyze the frequency and dominance of each type and to to describe how this analysis can contribute to meaningful learning in the English classroom through the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).
This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to examine linguistic features in natural discourse. Data were collected through non- participant observation and documentation. The data source is the movie script, supported by observation of character interactions and contextual clues.
The data were collected through the transcription and analysis of 579 presupposition-containing utterances from the film. The types of presuppositions identified include existential (125 instances, 21.5%), factive (89 instances, 15.37%), structural (134 instances, 23.14%), non-factive (74 instances, 12.78%), counterfactual (59 instances, 10.19%), and lexical (98 instances, 16.92%). Structural presupposition emerged as the most dominant type, indicating its frequent use in shaping implied meaning through grammatical structure. The analysis shows that incorporating presupposition into English learning through authentic film dialogue encourages pragmatic awareness and aligns with CLT by fostering contextual understanding, interaction, and meaningful communication.
