Keywords: media, short story, reading comprehension

Media such as short story can be offered as instructional media to teach English to students, especially in reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is one of the most important aspects of learning English as a foreign language. Based on the results of observations conducted at MA Al-Islam Joresan, most eleventh grade students still have difficulty in reading and understanding English writing, especially in long forms. This difficulty is caused by the learning media applied by teachers being monotonous and only focusing on LKS, so that students become less interested in the learning process. The solution offered by researchers to this problem is to use short story learning media to improve students' reading comprehension.
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of short story media on the reading comprehension of eleventh grade students at MA Al-Islam Joresan.
The approach used in this study was quantitative approach with an experimental research type. The experimental design used was quasi-experiment. This research used two classes an experimental group and a control group. The research population was the eleventh grade at MA Al-Islam Joresan consisting of 279 students’. The sample of this research was 24 students’ in the experimental class and 24 students’ in the control class. Data collection techniques used was test and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed using basic assumption tests in the form of normality and homogeneity tests and hypothesis tests with independent sample t-test and N-Gain test.
The result showed that short story learning media is effective for students' reading comprehension. This is proven by the results of the N-Gain percent which obtained a value of 62%. Based on independent sample t-test results, it can be seen that equal variances assumed show a sig number of 0.044. Thus, because 0.044 <0.05, H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. This proves that there is a significant difference in the average between the pretest and posttest results. Therefore, it can be concluded that short story learning media has an effect on the reading comprehension of eleventh grade students’ at MA Al-Islam Joresan.
