Keywords: Error Analysis, Writing, Descriptive Text
Writing is an important skill for students to have. By writing students can convey ideas, feelings, and information. In particular, writing descriptive texts can help students describe people, places or objects in detail. However, writing skills are considered more challenging than other language skills because they require mastery of vocabulary, sentence structure, and logical organization of ideas. When students do not master these aspects, they often experience errors when writing. In this case, teachers must analyse students' writing to identify errors so that they can help find and reduce errors in sentences.
This research aims to: (1) identify the types of errors students make in writing description texts, and (2) analyse the factors that cause errors in eleventh-grade students of MA Al-Islam Joresan Ponorogo. This study uses three main theories, namely from Dulay et al., H. Douglas Brown, and Norrish. This study aims to identify and analyze errors made by students in writing. According to Dulay et al., there are four categories of errors, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Meanwhile, H. Douglas Brown outlines four main causes of errors in language learning, namely L1 transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies. In addition, Norrish classifies the causes of errors into three categories, namely carelessness, first language interference, and direct translation. Furthermore, this research is expected to be a reference for English teachers, especially in teaching writing skills.
This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through document analysis (students' writings) and interviews with teachers and representatives of eleventh-grade students. Error identification was conducted based on 22 descriptive texts by eleventh-grade students of MA Al- Islam Joresan Ponorogo. Error analysis was obtained from interviews with teachers and students. The triangulation technique was used to validate the data by comparing the results of documentation and interviews.
The results show that: (1) the types of student errors in writing are omitting elements needed in the sentence (omission), adding unnecessary or wrong elements (addition), replacing wrong form of the morpheme or structure (misformation), and morphemes or groups of morphemes that are incorrectly placed in an utterance indicate errors (misordering). (2) The factors causing the errors include first language interference, lack of understanding of grammar, limited vocabulary, reliance on literal translation, and lack of guidance and practice from teachers.
