Reading constantly comes up as a crucial action in the process of learning English in order to become proficient in the language. When reading material in books, high-achieving students have different strategies in the process of understanding it. Reading comprehension strategies not only assist students in understanding texts better, but also contribute to higher academic achievement. Additionally prepare them to face exams more prepared and encourage them to think critically in solving various academic challenges. Therefore, the researcher examine the reading comprehension strategies used by high-achieving students in MTsN 1 Ponorogo.
This study aims to describe; 1) The reading comprehension strategies that high-achieving students used to comprehend texts in EFL classes; 2) How students' reading comprehension strategies contribute to their academic success in English language learning.
This research was designed using a qualitative approach with the type of phenomenological study and took place at MTsN 1 Ponorogo as one of the favorite schools. The data collection techniques used in this study are interview, observation, and documentation. The researcher also used the Think Aloud Protocol to analyze the reading comprehension strategies used by high-achieving students in more depth. As for data analysis using Miles Huberman and Saldana analysis, it consists of three streams of activities that occur simultaneously, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data display, and (3) conclusion drawing.
The results of this study show that 1) Reading comprehension strategies, such as summarizing, visualizing, and skimming are strategies that are mostly used by students in the accelerated class of MTsN 1 Ponorogo. Based on interview data, students find it easier to understand and remember important information through summarizing, while visualizing helps them represent information visually. Skimming allows students in the reading process to finish faster compared to other friends. The results show that students who apply reading comprehension strategies are more effective and efficient and have a higher level of engagement in the learning process with better critical thinking skills. 2) Students' reading comprehension strategies contribute to their academic success in English learning. With reading comprehension strategies, students experience significant improvement in their understanding of the subject matter so that they feel better prepared for exams. Students who consistently use reading comprehension strategies show a quick way of thinking with deep understanding so that their exam results are better than students who do not apply these strategies.
