Vocabulary is a foundational sub-skill and the most crucial element in learning English. In teaching vocabulary, teachers must use appropriate strategies and media to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary development also plays a key role in improving students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Without sufficient vocabulary, students may struggle to comprehend texts and express their ideas clearly. Therefore, effective vocabulary instruction is essential for overall language proficiency and academic success. The Scattergories game and flashcard media are strategies and tools that can be used in teaching vocabulary. They help students remember vocabulary more effectively and make it easier to understand narrative texts.
The purpose of this study was to know whether there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery of students who were taught using the Scattergories game strategy and flashcard media, and those who were not, at the eighth grade of MTs Mamba’ul Huda Sendang.
This research applied a quantitative approach and used a quasi-experimental design. Two classes were used as the experimental group and the control group. The population consisted of eighth-grade students of MTs Mamba’ul Huda Sendang. The total sample included 44 students from both the experimental and control groups. The data collection technique was a test (pre-test and post-test). In analyzing the data, the researcher used a t-test to determine the significant difference between students who were taught using the Scattergories game strategy and flashcard media and those who were not. The research aimed to assess the effectiveness of interactive media in vocabulary learning. The study was conducted over several meetings to ensure consistent treatment and accurate measurement of student progress.
The result of the research showed that the value of t₀ was 9.059 with df 42, while the t-table value at the significance level of 5% was 2.018 (t-test > t-table). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students who were taught using the Scattergories Game Strategy and Flashcard Media and those who were not. In other words, the use of the Scattergories Game Strategy and Flashcard Media was effective in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of MTs Mamba’ul Huda Sendang Jambon.
