Speaking is one of the most essential skills for mastering a language; it is also one of the most challenging aspects for students, particularly in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context. Many students struggle with speaking due to a lack of confidence and limited vocabulary, and exposure to English in their daily lives. To address these issues, MTs Darul Fikri Ponorogo introduced the English Daily Conversation programme. This initiative was designed to provide a consistent and structured environment in which students could regularly practise speaking English in various interactive formats. The programme aims to improve not only fluency and vocabulary, but also students’ confidence in using English for communication.
The objectives of this study are: (1) To explain the implementation of English Daily Conversation in developing students' speaking skills at MTs Darul Fikri; and (2) To identify the supporting and inhibiting factors that affect the implementation of the program.
The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
This study found that the implementation of English Daily Conversation consists of four main activities: dialogue memorization, information gap activities, role plays, and opinion sharing. These activities are conducted regularly and are tailored to students’ levels and interests. Supporting factors include student engagement, a supportive classroom environment, and gradually increasing task complexity. Inhibiting factors include students’ speaking anxiety, limited exposure to English outside the classroom, and time constraints during lessons. The study suggests that consistent implementation of English Daily Conversation, combined with supportive strategies from teachers, can significantly contribute to the improvement of students' speaking skills
