Abstract

VIDIANA, FAUZIYAH NORMA. 2024, The Effectiveness of Know-Want to Know-Learned Method in Teaching Listening at MTs Al-Islah Bungkal Ponorogo. Thesis, English Education Department, Tarbiyah Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies of Ponorogo. Advisor Dra. Hj. Aries Fitriani, M.Pd.
Key Word: Know-Want to Know-Learned Method, Teaching Method, Teaching Listening, Prior Knowledge.
Listening is a vital aspect of communication, but weak skills can hinder learning. English language (EFL) students often struggle with listening, as they read text rather than audio content. They also struggle with understanding content, distinguishing sounds, and processing passages slowly. Teachers need to provide creative teaching techniques and practice more. In Indonesia, traditional teaching methods like online schools and limited class time limit listening skill development. The Know-Want to Know-Learned method is suggested to improve listening skills by promoting individual reading engagement and connecting previously learned material with new knowledge. The KWL method aids students in learning content through questioning and reliable sources, focusing on reading and listening skills for effective communication and comprehensive understanding.
The objective of this research was to examine whether there was any significant difference on students listening score who where taught with the KWL method and those who were not taught with the KWL method at seventh grade students of MTs Al-Islah Bungkal Ponorogo.
This research applied quantitative approach and the design of this research was quasi experimental. This research used two classes as experimental group and control group. The population of this research was taken from the seventh grades students of MTs Al-Islah Bungkal Ponorogo in the academic year 2021/2022. The sample of this research was VII B as an experimental class and VII C as a control class with the total number of samples are 38 students. The procedure of data collection was test and documentation. To analysis it, used t-test formula to know whether there was significant difference on students’ listening scores who are taught by KWL method and students’ who are not taught by KWL method.
The study found that the experimental class had a higher mean score than the control class, with a Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
From the computation above it can be concluded that there is any significant difference between students’ listening scores who were taught by KWL method and those who were not taught using KWL method. It is become important to the teachers to increase and develop their ability in teaching. The teacher should be able to use the appropriate method in learning English especially in teaching listening to make the students were motivated in learning English especialy in listening.
