Abstract
Figurative language is an important element in
literature, especially in novels. It not only enhances the
aesthetic value of the text but also conveys deeper meaning
and emotions. However, many readers often focus solely on
the literal meaning, overlooking the significane of figurative
expressionsm. Therefore, understanding figurative language
is essential to fully grasp the message and emotional depth of
a literary work.
This research aimed to (1) identify the types of
figurative language found in the novel The One and Only Bob
by Katherine Applegate, and (2) analyse how the use of
figurative language in the novel affects the character of Bob.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative
content analysis method. The primary data were obtained
from the novel The One and Only Bob by Katherine
Applegate, while the secondary data were collected from
books, journals, and internet sources related to figurative
language. Data were collected through documentation and
analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model, which includes
data reduction, data display, and drawing or verifying
conclusions.
The results of this research showed that (1) there were
11 types of figurative language found in the novel The One
and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate, total of 260 figurative
language expressions were identified in the novel, consisting
of 61 similes, 43 metaphors, 31 personifications, 1
apostrophe, 5 metonymies, 21 symbols, 1 allegory, 8
paradoxes, 41 hyperboles, 18 litotes, and 30 instances of
irony. (2) The use of figurative language affected the
character by deepening his emotions, making his experiences
more vivid and helping readers connect with him on a
personal level. In The One and Only Bob, figurative
language—through simile, metaphor, personification,
apostrophe, metonymy, symbolism, allegory, paradox,
hyperbole, litotes, and irony—contributed to building Bob’s
emotional depth, making his journey vivid, relatable, and
emotionally engaging for the readers.
