Language is one of the most important things in human communication. Humans use every interaction that occurs in everyday life to communicate with other people. In other words, language is a communication tool to convey someone's thoughts, ideas, concepts, or feelings. Several media use language as a means of communication, one of which is movies. The movie is one of the media that uses language in its performance. It contains colorful language that has several functions. When people watch a movie, they will not only get entertainment, but also learn about the educational, moral, or values implied there, the language and dialogue or sayings they use, or learn about the literary elements in the movie.
This research aims to find out and discover what types of speech functions are used in the Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie by using M.A.K. Halliday’s theory. Apart from that, it is hoped that the significance of this research can be a motivation for the public to appreciate the art of cinema and filmmakers and can provide useful information for readers to gain a broader understanding of human communication and storytelling.
This research used a qualitative approach and employed a content analysis design. Data collection were carried out by analyzing the script for the Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie. Before analyzing the data in the movie script, the researcher watched the movie in its entirety to understand the plot of the story in Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie. After watching, the researcher also looked for sources of Speech Function theory from M.A.K Halliday from journals and e-books as a reference in sorting data in the film script.
The results of the research show that there are 7 types of Speech Functions in the Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie script. The types of speech functions found during the speech analysis are Instrumental function, Regulatory function, Interactional function, Personal function, Heuristic function, Imaginative function, and Representational function. The researcher found utterances from the Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie script that were included in the 7 types of Speech Functions according to M.A.K. Halliday and grouped them into sub-categories of each type of Speech Function. The instrumental function has 21 utterances with Expressing needs has 2 utterances, Seeking help has 1 utterance, organizing activities has 1 utterance, Influencing the environment has 13 utterances, and the last Determining what can and cannot do has 4 utterances. The regulatory function has 33 utterances with Request has 16 utterances, Rules has 11 utterances, and Persuasion has 6 utterances. The Interactional function has 34 utterances, with Maintaining the relationship having 21 utterances, and Developing the relationship having 13 utterances. Personal function has 27 utterances with Identity has 2 utterances, Feelings has 15 utterances, and Option has 10 utterances. Heuristic function has 20 utterances with Learn has 0 utterances, Discover has 12 utterances, and Explore has 8 utterances. Imaginative function has 2 utterances with an Abstract image that can be seen has 2 utterances with, abstract image that can be heard, and an abstract touchable image has 0 utterances. The last is the Representational function has 24 utterances with Request information has 0 utterances, and Relay information has 24 utterances.
