In this digital age, students often face unique challenges when it comes to self-acceptance. Pressure from peer comparison, societal expectations and hormonal changes can contribute to feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. To face these challenges, students must have a sense of self-acceptance. Self-acceptance means that the individual accepts himself fully and unconditionally, regardless of whether he behaves intelligently, correctly, or competently, and regardless of whether or not others approve, respect, or love him. Through this film, students can see Mei Lee's character development and understand the importance of self-acceptance.
This research has two aims. First, to find out howself-acceptance is portrayed in Mei Lee’s character in Turning Red Movie. Second, to describe how self-acceptance contributes to Mei Lee character development in Turning Red Movie.
This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through documentation technique. The main data source in this study were the utterances in the movie script from the film Turning Red (2022). The data in this study were analyzed using content analysis based on Albert Ellis' theory further developed by Michael E.Bernard (2013) for the aspect of self-acceptance, as well as Seymour Chattman's theory of character development.
The finding shows that Mei Lee's self-acceptance is portrayed through five aspects, namely self-awareness, appreciating self-potential, accepting criticism and failure, not judging oneself based on mistakes, and unconditional self-acceptance. These five aspects appear gradually throughout the movie through Mei Lee's dialogues and actions that shape Mei's emotional growth. Furthermore, self-acceptance significantly contributed to Mei's character development. At first, she appeared as a flat character who always obeyed her mother and suppressed her own desires. When she learned to accept herself, including her shortcomings and her red panda, Mei Lee became a more well-rounded character who was independent, expressive, and confident in her identity.
