The use of slang in everyday life is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially among students as a form of self-identity and popular culture. This phenomenon shows that there is a significant social and cultural influence on language development, which can affect formal and academic language skills. Therefore, it is important to understand the social factors and the influence of popular culture that affect the use of slang, in addition to balancing informal and formal language. This study aims to analyze the social and popular cultural factors that play a role in the use of English slang among students, as well as to determine the impact it has.
The study aims to identify how social dynamics on campus influence the use of English slang among students, as well as to examine the contribution of popular culture through social media to the development of such slang. In addition, this study will also analyze the implications of the increased use of slang on students' formal language skills. Thus, this study is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the social and cultural factors that influence the use of slang.
This research uses a qualitative approach to examine the social and cultural factors that influence the use of English slang among students at IAIN Ponorogo. Data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive picture of this phenomenon. This methodological approach enabled researchers to gain a deep understanding of the social and popular cultural factors that influence English slang.
The findings show that social dynamics on campus, such as familiarity and friendship groups, as well as the influence of popular culture through social media, music, and films, increase the frequency of slang use in their daily communication. Students tend to use slang as a form of social identity and group closeness. In addition, the increased use of slang has a positive impact on their informal communication skills, although it also poses challenges in the context of formal communication. These results demonstrate the importance of understanding social and cultural factors in the development of an English curriculum that is relevant to today's students.
