Vocabulary is an important aspect of learning English because it serves as the foundation for students to understand, speak, read, and write effectively. Based on the results of observations, the researcher found that tenth-grade students at SMAN 3 Ponorogo still experience difficulties in mastering English vocabulary. This affects their ability to understand and use vocabulary appropriately in learning contexts.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not there is a significant effect of using the Monopoly game on the vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade students at SMAN 3 Ponorogo.
In this study, the researcher used a quasi-experimental research design. In addition, the data collection method was conducted through direct observation in the form of pretests and posttests. The main subjects of this study were students of SMAN 3 Ponorogo, with a total sample of 71 students divided into two groups: 36 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class. In the experimental class, the learning method was implemented through the Monopoly game, while the control class used a conventional learning method.
The Monopoly learning model has proven to be an effective medium in the English learning process. Through this game, students not only receive information passively but also actively engage in a contextual, interactive, and enjoyable learning environment. The implementation of this model over two meetings showed an increase in learning activity from 53% to 61%, reflecting the effectiveness of the game in creating an active and meaningful learning atmosphere. The results of the study indicated that the use of the Monopoly game significantly improved the English vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade students at SMAN 3 Ponorogo, with the average score of the experimental class increasing from 74.9 in the pretest to 93.3 in the posttest, while the control class using conventional methods only increased from 76.3 to 88.9. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Monopoly game is more effective than conventional methods in enhancing students’ English vocabulary mastery as well as encouraging their motivation and engagement in the learning process.
