Abstract
YouTube videos have become one of the most effective learning media in English language teaching because they provide both visual and auditory input that helps students understand language in authentic contexts. Through YouTube
videos, students can learn vocabulary interestingly and engagingly, as they are exposed to real pronunciation, word usage, and situational examples. However, many students still face difficulties in mastering vocabulary, especially in understanding the meaning, form, and appropriate use of words. Therefore, it is important to apply media that can attract students’ attention and improve their vocabulary mastery effectively. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of YouTube videos in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery among the tenth graders of MA Ma’arif
Klego, Ponorogo. Specifically, this study compared the vocabulary achievement of students taught using YouTube videos and those taught using PowerPoint media to
determine which method was more effective in enhancing vocabulary mastery.
This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes: the experimental class taught using YouTube videos and the control class taught using PowerPoint. Each class consisted of 15 students.
The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using the
Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, the Levene test for homogeneity, and the
Independent Sample T-Test with the help of SPSS.
The results revealed that students who were taught using YouTube
videos achieved better vocabulary mastery than those who were taught using
PowerPoint. The mean score of the experimental class in the post-test was 85.88,
while that of the control class was 78.32. The Independent Sample T-Test showed
a significance value of 0.025 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the
two groups. Moreover, the N-Gain mean score was 72.40%, which falls into the
high category of improvement. Therefore, it can be concluded that YouTube videos
are effective in increasing the vocabulary mastery of tenth-graders at MA Ma’arif
Klego.
