Writing skills are an important skill that students must master in English language learning. The success of language learning greatly depends on the ability to participate in writing. Therefore, mastering writing skills is a crucial aspect of foreign language learning. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language, and students often face challenges when writing in English due to limited exposure and opportunities to practice. The Project-Based Learning (PBL) teaching model is one of the most widely used models in language teaching, designed to provide a structured approach to learning and writing practice.
This study aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in teaching writing skills to eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Jetis Ponorogo and to identify the challenges and solutions encountered during its application.
This research employed a qualitative descriptive design, The participants consisted of one English teacher and eighth-grade students actively involved in the learning process. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of students’ writing projects. The collected data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which includes three main stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings of this study reveal that the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in teaching writing was carried out systematically and consistently through six major stages. These stages include identifying key questions, designing the project, scheduling the project timeline, monitoring students’ progress, evaluating the final outcomes, and reflecting on the overall learning experience. Each of these stages played an essential role in guiding students through a structured and meaningful writing process.During the implementation, two central challenges were identified. The first challenge concerned students’ lack of focus during classroom activities, which often disrupted the flow of learning. This issue was primarily experienced by the teacher, who had to continuously maintain classroom engagement while ensuring that students remained on task. The second challenge involved the limited time students had to complete their project tasks. Given the complexity of the writing stages—planning, drafting, revising, and finalizing—many students required more time than initially allocated. Despite these obstacles, the teacher successfully employed several adaptive strategies to overcome them. These included providing additional motivation to help students refocus, offering more intensive guidance throughout the writing stages, and implementing flexible deadlines to accommodate students’ varying progress rates. By extending the project submission timeline, students were able to complete their tasks more thoroughly without experiencing excessive pressure, which contributed to maintaining the quality of their written work.
