Abstract

English plays a vital role as an international language and is essential in various fields including education, technology, and communication. In Indonesia, writing is one of the four core skills taught in English classes, yet it remains one of the most challenging for students. Writing requires not only correct grammar and vocabulary but also creativity and structure, which many students struggle with. To address this issue, this research introduces the use of YouChat, an AI-powered online platform designed to assist students in generating ideas, improving vocabulary, and organizing their thoughts more effectively in writing. Based on the theory of constructivism by Vygotsky and the application of AI in education, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of YouChat in enhancing students’ writing skills.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of YouChat AI in improving students’ writing performance, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and overall coherence. It compares students who use the platform in their learning process with those who do not. This research aims to provide insights into how AI tools can support English Language Teaching students in producing more accurate and well-structured academic writing.
This study applies a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design, using a non equivalent control group involving pretests and posttests. The research was conducted over a span of two months at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, involving 60 tenth-grade students from two different classes: X-6 as the experimental group (30 students) and X-5 as the control group (30 students). The data collection techniques included pretest and posttest assessments focusing on writing aspects such as content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics, along with classroom observation to evaluate students’ engagement and responses during the learning process. The hypothesis testing employed an independent sample t-test using SPSS 22.
Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the writing performance of students who use the YouChat AI platform compared to those who use conventional methods. The implementation of YouChat AI effectively improves students' writing comprehension, as evidenced by the significantly higher average posttest scores in the experimental class (87.93) compared to the control class (74.27). This difference indicates that YouChat AI not only helps students better understand written content and enhance their critical thinking skills but also serves as a more effective tool in improving overall writing skills compared to traditional learning methods.
