Abstract

Keywords: Social Media, English Learning, Perception, EFL Students.
Social media has emerged as a significant tool for communication,
education, and interaction in the digital era. Its use in English as a Foreign Language
(EFL) education is increasingly prominent due to its accessibility, flexibility, and
engaging content. This research investigates the perceptions of students at MA
Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo regarding the role of social media in supporting their
English learning. It also explores the challenges faced by students and their
strategies for overcoming them.
The objectives of this research are: 1) to evaluate students' perceptions of
the effectiveness of social media in enhancing their English learning, and 2) to
identify the challenges encountered by students when using social media for
English learning and their approaches to addressing these challenges. This study
utilized theories on digital learning and language acquisition.
This research employed a descriptive-qualitative method. The subjects were
ten students from XII IPS class at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, selected using
purposive sampling. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations,
and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model,
consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings indicate that 1) students perceive social media as an effective
tool for enhancing vocabulary, pronunciation, and overall motivation in learning
English. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube provide engaging and
flexible learning opportunities. 2) Students face challenges such as distractions,
misinformation, and overuse of social media. Strategies like selective content
consumption, time management, and teacher guidance help mitigate these
challenges. This research highlights the potential of social media to bridge formal
and informal learning environments, fostering greater autonomy and engagement
in EFL education.
