Learning English is essential for students to participate successfully in academic, social, and global communication. Among the four language skills, speaking plays a crucial role because it reflects students ability to use English in real communication. In Al-Islam Islamic Boarding House Ponorogo that implement a compulsory English-speaking policy, students are required to use English in daily activities. However, many new students still experience difficulties in speaking, especially during their early adaptation period. These difficulties may affect their confidence and participation in the learning process. Therefore, it is important to investigate the types and causes of students speaking difficulties in such an environment.
The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the types of speaking difficulties experienced by new students at Al-Islam Islamic Boarding House Ponorogo, (2) analysis the factors causing the speaking difficulties, and (3) examine the teachers strategies to overcome those difficulties.

The participants of this study were six new students and one English teacher at Al-Islam Islamic Boarding House Ponorogo. The data were analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure data validity, triangulation technique was applied.

These difficulties were caused by insufficient mastery of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, real-time processing challenges, anxiety, lack of confidence, and limited exposure to English. To overcome these problems, the teacher creating supportive and structured group work, assigning specific roles to ensure equal participation, simplifying language input and pre-teaching vocabulary, selecting engaging and relevant speaking topics, encouraging consistent English use while monitoring students language behavior, and giving clear objectives before each speaking task.
