Abstract

Writing is one of the essential skills that students must master. It is also considered the most difficult skill to acquire because writing is a complicated process. One way to improve writing skills is through consistent practice, starting from simple tasks. Recount text is one of the basic text types that can be used as a learning medium to develop students’ writing skills. By integrating students’ daily lives into the writing process, it is expected to enhance their motivation to improve their writing abilities.
The purpose of this research is to examine students’ writing abilities and to identify the errors found in their written works. Understanding students’ writing performance and their common mistakes is expected to help teachers find appropriate solutions for improvement and to apply teaching methods that suit students’ conditions.
This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. It was conducted at MA Miftahul Ulum Kedungpanji Magetan, involving 10 tenth-grade students from class X B as research subjects. The instruments used in this study were a writing test and a questionnaire. To analyze the data, the researcher identified errors using assessment rubrics from Hughes and Katarina Wood, along with writing scoring criteria by Jacobs et al.
The results of this study indicate that students' writing ability is in the "good" category, with an average score of 65.9. However, based on the data, students still made several errors in writing recount texts. The analysis revealed that the most frequent errors occurred in the mechanics aspect (61%), followed by organization (62%). To overcome these issues, students need to engage in more writing practice, especially focusing on mechanics and organization. Teachers should also provide more opportunities for guided writing activities, supported by methods and strategies tailored to students’ needs, particularly in improving mechanics and organizational aspects in writing recount texts.
