Reading comprehension ability is one of the basic skills that is very important in learning English to face the challenges in the 21st century. Reading comprehension skills play a major role in shaping students' critical thinking skills and understand information from the text. However, based on the results of preliminary research was found that the reading comprehension skills of students at SMAN 1 Slahung Ponorogo were indeed relatively low. Many students still have difficulties in understanding the content of English reading, including in identifying main ideas, detailed information, and concluding the content of the text accurately.
This research examined the effectiveness of the CBI approach through Quizizz (Wayground) in learning reading comprehension and compared learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups. The objective is to find out the significant difference in reading comprehension ability between students taught using the CBI approach through Quizizz (Wayground) and who are not. Furthermore, the significance of the research expected to provide alternative strategies for teachers to teach reading in a more interesting and interactive way.
Applied a quantitative approach and quasi experimental-design, the research population was the tenth grade consisting of 147 students. The sample in this research were 28 students in the experimental class and 25 students in the control class. Data were collected through reading test and documentation, then analyzed using Independent Sample T-test by SPSS 22 for Windows.
The descriptive statistics showed that the mean post-test score in the experimental class was 68.21, and 61.80 in the control class. Furthermore, the results of data analysis and hypothesis testing indicated that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted with a significance level of 0.015. It can be concluded that there was a significant improvement in the experimental class, indicating that the use of the CBI approach combined with Quizizz (Wayground) effectively enhances students’ reading comprehension skills.
