Abstract
Speaking is a challenging skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students due to a lack of confidence, limited vocabulary, and anxiety. One teaching strategy that can help overcome this problem is retelling narrative story strategy, which allows students to retell stories using their own words and practice speaking in meaningful contexts.
This research aims to examine whether narrative retelling significantly improves student’s speaking skills and self-confidence. Furthermore, the significance of the research was expected to be useful information for English teachers, especially in teaching speaking.
This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pre-test and post-test control group design. It was conducted at MTsN 1 Jetis Ponorogo. The population consisted of ninth-grade students, and the sample included 60 students divided into two groups: 30 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control class. The experimental class was taught using the retelling narrative story strategy, while the control class was taught using conventional teaching. The measurement tools used in this research were a speaking test and a self-confidence questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test and an independent sample t-test using SPSS version 29.
The results showed that the experimental group experienced greater improvement compared to the control group. The mean score of speaking skills in the experimental class increased from 51.67 in the pre-test to 76.67 in the post-test, while the control class increased from 50.33 to 59.50. In addition, the mean score of self-confidence in the experimental class increased from 27.70 to 31.07, whereas the control class increased slightly from 27.37 to 28.50. The paired sample t-test showed a p-values of 0.002 for self-confidence and 0.001 for speaking skills, indicating significant improvement after the treatment. Furthermore, the independent sample t-test also showed significant differences between the experimental and control classes with p-values of 0.009 for self-confidence and 0.001 for speaking skills. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the retelling narrative stories strategy has a significant influence on improving students’ self-confidence and speaking skills. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. These findings provide useful insights for English teachers on how to implement effective teaching strategies and improve students’ language proficiency in various classroom learning contexts.
