Abstract

Anxiety is one of the affective factors that influences students in learning a foreign language, especially in speaking English. Many students feel nervous, worried, and afraid when they have to speak English in the classroom. This condition can influence students’ speaking performance and make them less confident to express their ideas. Therefore, teachers need to use appropriate teaching strategies to help students addressing their anxiety and improve their speaking ability. One of the strategies that can be used is scaffolding technique.

The purposes of this research were to describe the implementation of scaffolding techniques in teaching speaking and to understand how students experience speaking anxiety and how they perceive the support given by the teacher during the speaking activities to addressing their speaking anxiety.

This research used a descriptive qualitative case study design. The participants of this research were the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Jenangan Ponorogo in the academic year 2025/2026. The data were collected through classroom observation, Interview, and documentation. The researcher observed the teaching and learning process to see how the teacher applied scaffolding techniques in speaking activities. The data were analyzed using the data analysis technique of Miles and Huberman which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.

The results of this research showed that the teacher implemented several scaffolding techniques in speaking activities such as teacher modeling by using reading aloud, vocabulary games, peer support with group discussion, and activating their prior knowledge. These techniques helped students participate more actively in the classroom and made them feel more confident when speaking English. The use of scaffolding also created a more supportive learning environment which helped addressing students’ speaking anxiety.
