Abstract

The essential of language is not just a structure or a system of symbols, but also a medium containing implied meanings that can only be understood through the context of social interaction. In this regard, implicature plays a crucial role in revealing meanings that are not explicitly stated in utterances. In historical dramas, such Anne with an E Season 3, implicatures emerge through indirect language that reflects character relationships, power dynamics, and the values of a particular time period, requiring contextual interpretation to be fully understood.
This study aims to: 1) identify and analyze the types and frequency of flouting of Grice’s maxims in third season of Anne with an E, 2) to identify and explain the forms of conversational implicatures that appear in the series, and 3) to examine how the historical context of post-Confederation Canada shapes the interpretation of these implicatures within the narrative.
This research applied a qualitative approach and used a content analysis design. The data consist of characters’ dialogues taken from the series Anne with an E Season 3 on Netflix. The data collection procedure involves documenting scenes that contain implicatures. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through coding and categorization, combined with Grice’s theory of conversational implicature.
The results showed that the characters in this series flouted of the maxims of relevance (52.3%), quality (38.6%), quantity (6.8%), and manner (2.3%). The characters flouted the maxim of relevance to express disagreement or avoid direct discussion, the maxim of quality to convey sarcasm or irony, the maxim of quantity due to incomplete responses, and the maxim of manner to express emotions. These implicatures were also influenced by the post-Confederation Canadian context, particularly in relation to the social norms and colonial policies of that time.
