Abstract

Peer collaboration through the Think Pair Share (TPS) method is one of the instructional strategies that can be applied in English language teaching, particularly to improve students’ speaking skills. Speaking is an essential skill in English language learning because students are expected to express ideas, opinions, and information orally. However, in practice, students often encounter various difficulties, such as limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, pronunciation problems, and a lack of opportunities to practice speaking. Therefore, the implementation of peer collaboration through the TPS method is expected to help students develop their speaking skills through interaction and discussion with their peers.
This study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in speaking skills between students who were taught using peer collaboration through the TPS method and those who were taught without the method at MTs Al-Azhar Sampung Ponorogo. In addition, the findings of this study are expected to provide useful information for English teachers in selecting effective teaching strategies to develop students’ speaking skills.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental class and a control class. The population consisted of 105 eighth-grade students of MTs Al-Azhar Sampung Ponorogo. The sample comprised 26 students in the experimental class and 26 students in the control class. Data were collected through a speaking test and analyzed using the independent sample t-test formula.
The findings revealed that the mean post-test score of the experimental class was 64.76, while the mean post-test score of the control class was 58.15. The result of the t-test showed that the obtained t-value was 6.615, which was higher than the t-table value of 2.010 at the 0.05 significance level. These findings indicate that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. The significant difference occurred because peer collaboration provided students with more opportunities to interact, exchange ideas, give feedback, and actively practice speaking with their peers. Furthermore, the collaborative learning environment helped increase students’ self-confidence, reduce their anxiety when speaking English, and improve various aspects of speaking skills, including fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension. Therefore, it can be concluded that peer collaboration through the TPS method is effective in improving students’ speaking skills at MTs Al-Azhar Sampung Ponorogo.
