Abstract
Language is a sophisticated system reflecting human perception and cognition. In cognitive linguistics, metaphors are cognitive structures that generate meaning, not just stylistic devices. In novels like The Old Man and the Sea, they help comprehend abstract concepts via concrete experiences, revealing the protagonist's psychology and deeper themes.
A conceptual metaphor is a cognitive linguistic concept where we understand one abstract idea (the "target domain") in terms of a more concrete, physical idea (the "source domain"). It is not just a figure of speech, but a fundamental way humans think, reason, and act
This study aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors found in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and to examine the meanings behind these metaphorical expressions. The significance of this research is expected to provide theoretical contributions to cognitive linguistics and practical benefits for English language teaching by enhancing interpretative skills
This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data source was the novel The Old Man and the Sea. Data collection was conducted through close reading and documentation techniques. To analyze the data, the researcher utilized the Qualitative Content Analysis model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña based on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) proposed by Lakoff and Johnson.
The results showed that there are three broad types of metaphors—structural, orientational, and ontological—operating dynamically within the story. The study identified a total of 42 metaphorical expressions, with ontological metaphors being the most dominant type. Elements such as the sea, the marlin, and the lions are conceptualized as metaphors for resilience, dignity, and the human struggle against nature. It can be concluded that conceptual metaphors serve as vital cognitive tools in constructing meaning and interpreting the protagonist's existential journey in the novel.
