Abstract
English plays crucial role in vocational education, particularly in the
tourism sector where effective communication with international visitors is
essential. However, many vocational students still face difficulties using English
confidently due to limited opportunities for real life practice and the dominance of
theory based learning. Therefore, practice approaches such as guiding laboratory
integrated with tour visit activities are needed to provide authentic learning
experiences and enhances students’ communication competence in real tourism
context.
This study aims to explore the implementation of the guiding laboratory
through tour visit activities in English language learning and to investigate
students’ perceptions toward its use at the Tourism Department of Ar-Rohman
Tegalrejo Vocational School, Magetan.
This research employed a qualitative case study designed involving on
English teacher and students of class XII ULW (Usaha Layanan Wisata). The data
were collected through observation, interviews and documentation, and analyzed
using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The research reveal that the guiding laboratory is implemented through
structured stages, namely pre-visit preparation, tour visit practice, and post-visit
reflection. The activities integrate English in authentic contexts. The teacher plays
a significant role as facilitator, supervisor, and evaluator, while students actively
participate in guiding activities using English as the primary language. This result
showed students positive perceptions toward the guiding laboratory. They
reported increased confidence, improved speaking skills, and better understanding
of tourism related communication. Despite some challenges such as nervousness,
limited vocabulary and pronunciation difficulties, the experiential learning
approach provided meaningful learning experiences and enhanced students’
readiness for real-world tourism work. This research imply that integration of
guiding laboratory with tour visit activities contributes to the development of
tourism ready graduates with stronger communication skills and professional
competence. Guiding Laboratory support the tourism industry by preparing
students who are more confident, communicative, and capable of interacting
effectively with international tourist in real-world situations.
