Abstract

Asmi, Nazwa Aurelia. 2026. An Analysis of Deixis Used in the Movie Wonka. Undergraduate Thesis. English Language Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo. Advisor: Fenty Andriani, M.Pd. Keywords: Context, Deixis, Pragmatics, Wonka Movie Language serves not only as a means of communication, but also as a tool for conveying meaning that is highly dependent on context. In pragmatics, deixis is one of the fundamental aspects explaining how the meaning of an utterance is constructed and interpreted based on the situational context in which it occurs. Movie Utterances, as a form of contextual communication, provides rich linguistic data for examining the use of deictic expressions across diverse communicative situations. This study aims to: (1) identify the types of deixis found in the Utterances of the Wonka movie, and (2) analyze the language functions of the deictic expressions found in the movie. These objectives are intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of how deictic expressions are used to construct meaning in communication and how they reflect the communicative intentions and social relationship of the characters. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The data were taken from utterances in the Wonka movie. The researcher analyzed the data using Yule’s theory of deixis and Jakobson’s theory of language functions. Data were collected through documentation, classified into categories, and interpreted based on the context of the utterances. The findings show that there were 63 data of deixis in the Wonka movie, divided into five types: person deixis (24 data), time deixis (10 data), place deixis (10 data), discourse deixis (9 data), and social deixis (10 data). Person deixis became the most dominant type, especially first person pronouns such as I and we. In addition, 35 data of language functions were identified, including referential (7 data), emotive (7 data), conative (6 data), phatic (6 data), metalingual (4 data), and poetic functions (5 data). The findings indicate that deixis and language functions are closely related in helping audiences understand meaning, relationships between characters, and the context of communication in the movie.
