Abstract
Writing is an important skill for EFL students, especially at senior high school level. It is used to express ideas and opinions in written form. However, writing is often difficult because students need to generate and organize their ideas clearly. Many students still focus more on the final product, so they have limited guidance in developing their ideas step by step. As a result, they often have difficulties in expressing ideas and producing well-structured writing.
The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference on the writing skills of students taught using process writing based mind mapping compared to students taught using without learning methods.
This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi experimental design. This study used two classes, one class as an experimental group, while one class was used as a control group. The population taken came from class XI students at MAN 1 Ponorogo, with a total sample of 30 students from each groups. Data were collected through writing tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using a t-test to determine whether there was a significant difference between the writing skills of students taught using process writing based mind mapping and students taught using without learning methods.
The results showed that the average value of the experimental class increased from 69.67 in the pre-test to 81.03 in the post-test, while the control class increased from 69.23 to 74.87. In addition, the results of the independent sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 which is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). This indicates that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means there is a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class after being given treatment. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of process writing based mind mapping is effective in improving students' writing skills.
