Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component in English language learning, yet many eleventh-grade students at Bina Karya Medika Health Vocational High School Ponorogo, still face difficulties in understanding health-related English vocabulary. Studies on the use of Podcast-based media as an alternative for vocabulary development in a vocational EFL context remain limited. Therefore, the integration of accessible and engaging audio-based learning media is important to support students’ vocabulary acquisition and improve their learning outcomes.
The objective of this research is to find out the significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students who are taught using the BBC’s ‘6 Minute English’ Podcast on Spotify and those who are taught using ‘LEP – Learn English Podcast’ on YouTube.
This study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test. It involved both the control and experimental classes. Data were collected through vocabulary test administered to 54 students of eleventh-grade divided into two groups: the experimental class (n=27) receiving treatment using the BBC’s ‘6 Minute English’ podcast on Spotify, end the control class (n=27) using the ‘LEP- Learn English Podcast’ YouTube channel. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, Independent Samples T-Test, and N-Gain test using SPSS Version 25.
The findings show that the experimental class achieved a mean post-test score of 80,93, significantly higher than the control class mean of 69,26. The Independent Samples T-Test yielded a significance value of 0,000 (p < 0,05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The N-Gain analysis further revealed that the experimental class obtained a mean score of 0,570 (57%), categorized as a medium gain, while the control class obtained 0,219 (21,90%), classified as low gain. Overall, the BBC’s ‘6 Minute English’ Podcast on Spotify serves as a more effective and accessible digital medium for supporting EFL students’ vocabulary mastery, particularly in a vocational school setting.
