This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Content-Based Instruction (CBI) through interactive infographics in teaching students’ technical vocabulary mastery in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The background of this research is based on the low achievement of students’ English learning outcomes, particularly in technical vocabulary, which have not met the Minimum Completion Criteria (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum/KKM). This condition indicates the need for an instructional approach that integrates language learning with vocational content relevant to students’ field of study.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population of the study consisted of all Grade X students of Heavy Equipment Engineering at SMK PGRI 2 Ponorogo. The sample included 70 students from two classes, namely class X Heavy Equipment Engineering 2 as the experimental group and class X Heavy Equipment Engineering 3 as the control group, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test instruments designed to measure students’ technical vocabulary mastery. The instruments were validated and tested for reliability prior to implementation. Data analysis was conducted using prerequisite tests, paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.
The results of the study revealed a significant difference in students’ technical vocabulary mastery between the experimental class taught using Content-Based Instruction through interactive infographics and the control class taught using conventional methods. Students in the experimental group showed a higher verify learning intruction in vocabulary mastery, indicating that the integration of vocational content with visual-based learning media effectively enhanced students’ understanding and retention of technical English vocabulary.
Furthermore, the findings suggest that interactive infographics play an important role in supporting meaningful learning by providing contextualized and visually engaging materials that align with students’ vocational needs. This study implies that English teachers in vocational schools are encouraged to implement Content-Based Instruction supported by interactive infographics as an alternative instructional strategy to improve students’ ESP vocabulary mastery and overall
