This research was motivated by the importance of educational values and emotional intelligence in current learning. Education does not only focus on academic achievement, but also on character building, emotional maturity, and students social development. Inside Out 2 was chosen as the object of this research because it presents adolescent emotional conflicts, friendship, anxiety, identity formation, and moral decision-making.
This study aims to identify the educational values portrayed in Inside Out 2, to analyze how emotional intelligence is represented through the characters and storyline of the movie, and to examine the relevance of these findings to current educational practices within the framework of Kurikulum Merdeka.
This study employed a qualitative approach with content analysis as the research design. The data were collected from scenes, dialogues, character interactions, emotional expressions, and visual elements in the Inside Out 2 movie, accessed legally through the Disney+ Hotstar platform. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (1994) framework, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis was guided by Thomas Lickona’s (1991) theory of character education to identify educational values, and Daniel Goleman’s (1995) theory of emotional intelligence to examine emotional intelligence components. Validity was ensured through data triangulation, theoretical triangulation, persistent observation, and peer-debriefing.
The findings reveal that Inside Out 2 contains five educational values such as honesty (7 instances), respect (4), responsibility (4), caring (10), and self-discipline (5) as well as five emotional intelligence components: self-awareness (18 instances), self-regulation (15), motivation (13), empathy (12), and social skills (12). These values and components are represented through the characters actions, dialogues, emotional conflicts, and interpersonal relationships. It can be concluded that Inside Out 2 carries significant educational relevance, as its narrative closely mirrors the moral and emotional experiences of adolescent learners. Within the framework of Kurikulum Merdeka, the movie has strong pedagogical potential as an alternative learning medium for fostering character development, emotional literacy, social awareness, and meaningful reflection aligned with the Profil Pelajar Pancasila.
