Abstract

Grammar is one of the essential components in learning English, especially in EFL contexts. Through mastering grammar, students are able to construct meaningful and accurate sentences. However, many students still face difficulties in understanding and using English tenses, particularly past tenses such as simple past, past continuous, and past perfect. In addition, students often show low motivation in learning grammar due to monotonous teaching methods. Therefore, innovative teaching strategies such as Project-based Learning (PBL) combined with digital platforms like Duolingo are needed to improve students’ motivation and grammar skills.
This research aimed to determine whether there is a significant effect of using Project-based Learning with Duolingo on students’ motivation and grammar skills. Furthermore, the significance of this research was expected to provide useful information for English teachers, especially in teaching grammar through technology integrated learning.
This research applied a quantitative approach and used a quasi-experimental design. The research used two classes, namely an experimental class and control class. The population of this research were tenth grade students of MAN 3 Madiun in the academic year 2025/2026. The sample consisted of X-A as the experimental class and X B as the control class, with 17 students in each class. The procedure of data collection used grammar tests and motivation questionnaires administered as pre-tests and post-tests. To analyze the data, the researcher used IBM SPSS version 25, including Independent Sample T-Test and N-Gain Score analysis.
The result showed that the experimental class achieved higher improvement compared to the control class. The mean post-test score of the experimental class reached 80.88, while the control class only reached 59.41. Based on the Independent Sample T-Test analysis, the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. In addition, the N-Gain score of the experimental class was 62.94% and categorized as moderate and fairly effective, while the control class only obtained 21.63% and was categorized as low and ineffective. The motivation on analysis also showed that the experimental class had a higher mean rank compared to the control class with a significance value of 0.000. Therefore, it can be concluded that Project-based Learning integrated with Duolingo is effective in enhancing students’ motivation and grammar skills, particularly in mastering past tenses.
