Abstract

Speaking is a fundamental skill in English language teaching, as it reflects learners’ ability to convey ideas, opinions, and feelings effectively in communicative contexts. However, many students encounter difficulties in developing speaking proficiency due to limited vocabulary, low confidence, and the use of less engaging instructional media, especially in SMA Bakti Ponorogo. Therefore, the integration of innovative media, such as cubes within the storytelling method, is considered a potential strategy to enhance students’ speaking ability.
This research aims to investigate whether the use of cubes as a learning media within the storytelling method significantly improves students’ speaking ability at SMA Bakti Ponorogo. In addition, this study is expected to provide pedagogical insights for English teachers on how to implement interactive media to enhance students’ speaking performance in the classroom.
This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, specifically a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 28 eleventh-grade students, divided into an experimental class (15 students) and a control class (13 students). Data were collected through pre-test and post-test speaking assessments encompassing fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, vocabulary, and content. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and N-Gain scores.
The findings revealed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 59.87 to 84.93, while the control group improved from 58.15 to 69.92. The t-test result (< 0.05) indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The N-Gain score of the experimental group was 0.6339 (moderate category). It can be concluded that the use of cubes within the storytelling method significantly improves students’ speaking ability.
