This research examines the implementation of a Language Monitoring Program with a Language Zone system in enhancing students' speaking skills at Arrisalah Islamic Boarding School Ponorogo. This program is a structured initiative designed to ensure that students consistently use Arabic and English in their daily lives within the boarding school environment.
The primary focus of the study is to describe the program's implementation process, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and understand the perspectives of teachers and students regarding the program's impact on speaking ability.
The research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were gathered through direct observation of students' language activities, in-depth interviews with three language supervisors and two student informants, and program documentation. Furthermore, questionnaires were distributed to 150 students to complement the data regarding their perceptions and attitudes toward the effectiveness of the monitoring program being implemented.
The findings show that the program is implemented through a systematic mechanism, including a weekly language rotation system (Language Zone), a peer monitoring mechanism, and a disciplinary framework involving educational sanctions and rewards. Oversight is centralized in the Language Department, which is responsible for briefing student monitors and managing violation reports. The program is also sustained by daily academic support, such as English language courses, regular vocabulary distribution, and structured conversation practice. It was found that the program contributes significantly to students' development, with 84.7% of respondents agreeing that the program enhances their confidence, speaking fluency, and vocabulary mastery. However, the program also faces several obstacles, such as the persistent habit of students using their native language, low self-confidence or fear of making mistakes, a disproportionate ratio of students to supervisors, and insufficient vocabulary mastery among some students. Overall, the Language Monitoring Program at Arrisalah Islamic Boarding School is effective in creating an immersive language environment that supports students' communicative competence.
