Cultural Arts learning at the elementary school level is still largely dominated by conventional teacher-centered approaches and a strong reliance on textual textbooks. This phenomenon creates a gap between the ideal learning environment, which should be interactive and contextual, and the reality of low student participation and difficulties in deeply internalizing subject concepts. The urgency of this study arises from the need for innovative learning media that integrate local wisdom to transform abstract concepts into more concrete, meaningful, and engaging learning experiences for students.
This study aims to address the issue of low student engagement by developing an innovative learning medium that is relevant to the characteristics of fifth-grade students. The primary focus is the development of an Ethnosmartcard learning medium based on local wisdom to enhance students’ conceptual understanding in Cultural Arts education. Specifically, the study seeks to describe the development process and evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the resulting product to ensure its suitability as a supporting learning medium in elementary schools.
This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE development model, which consists of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The participants were 26 fifth-grade students of SDIT Qurrota Ayyun Ponorogo. Data were analyzed using Aiken’s Index to assess validity, percentage-based criteria to measure practicality, and the N-gain score to determine the effectiveness of the media in improving students’ conceptual understanding.
The findings indicate that the Ethnosmartcard learning medium achieved a very high level of validity, with Aiken’s Index ranging from 0.75 to 1.00 based on expert evaluations. The practicality level reached 92.77%, demonstrating that the medium is highly practical for classroom implementation. Furthermore, the medium proved effective in improving students’ conceptual understanding, as evidenced by an average N-gain score of 0.68, which falls within the moderate-to-high category. These findings contribute to the advancement of ethnopedagogy-based learning media that strengthen both cultural identity and students’ cognitive competencies in Islamic elementary education (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah)
