Abstract
This study is grounded in the importance of achieving national education goals as stated in Law Number 20 of 2003, which emphasizes the development of students’ potential, character, and cultural awareness. In this context, folklore serves as a valuable resource in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning as it contains moral, cultural, and social values that support both language acquisition and character education. However, understanding folklore texts requires more than literal comprehension, as students often need to interpret implied meanings embedded in the narratives. This shows the need to use a pragmatic approach to help readers comprehend the text's implied meanings.
To address this challenge, the study aims to identify and classify the types of explicature found in The Legend of Malin Kundang and The Legend of Timun Mas, and analyze their roles in supporting reading comprehension by applying relevance theory proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson. The study seeks to demonstrate how explicature analysis can enhance students’ understanding of folklore texts, contribute to more effective literature-based learning, and provide pedagogical insights for integrating pragmatic analysis into EFL reading instruction.
This study employed a qualitative content analysis approach. The data consisted of sentences, clauses, and utterances containing explicature from The Legend of Malin Kundang and The Legend of Timun Mas, taken from official English textbooks for secondary education. Data were collected through documentation. The analysis followed Krippendorff’s stages, including unitizing, sampling, coding, data reduction, abductive inference, and narration.
The analysis reveals that The Legend of Malin Kundang contains four types of explicature processes, namely disambiguation, reference resolution, saturation, and ad hoc concept construction. Meanwhile, The Legend of Timun Mas involves three explicature processes, namely disambiguation, saturation, and free enrichment, and all processes are concentrated in the “Timun Mas Fighting the Giant” section. Explicature plays a crucial role in reading comprehension by enabling readers to construct meaning where disambiguation clarifies vocabulary meaning, reference resolution identifies referents, and saturation, free enrichment, and ad hoc concept construction support deeper inference, which helps readers to understand text more easily.
