This study analyzes the languange functions used by the main character, Sandy Cheeks, in the movie Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. Language has an important role in communication because it is used to express feelings, deliver information, influence others, and maintain social relationships. In a movie, languange functions help characters convey their intentions, emotions, and cultural values through dialogue. Therefore, this research aims to identify the types of languange functions used by Sandy Cheeks and to explain the influence of languange functions on emotions, social relationships, knowledge, and culture.
This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a library research approach. The data source of this study is the dialogue transcript of Sandy Cheeks in the movie. The researcher applies the theory of languange functions proposed by Roman Jakobson, which consists of expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic functions. The data were collected through observation, note-taking, classification, and analysis of the utterances spoken by Sandy Cheeks throughout the movie.
The findings of this research show that all six languange functions are found in Sandy Cheeks’ utterances. The expressive function appears 65 times, directive function 42 times, referential function 41 times, poetic function 25 times, metalinguistic function 9 times, and phatic function 9 times. The expressive function becomes the most dominant type because Sandy frequently expresses emotions, feelings, and personal attitudes in various situations during the movie.
Furthermore, the study reveals that languange functions have important influences in communication. Languange functions can affect emotions, build and maintain social relationships, improve knowledge and understanding, and reflect cultural values in society. Through the use of different languange functions, Sandy Cheeks is able to communicate effectively with other characters and strengthen the message delivered in the movie. Therefore, languange functions play a significant role in developing pragmatic competence and understanding communication in everyday life.
